Business Development Consultant Job Description Template

1. About the Role

Turning a qualified pipeline into signed contracts and knowing which prospects are worth pursuing is what separates a productive Business Development Consultant from one who simply stays busy. This role owns the outbound prospecting motion in a B2B commercial sales environment: generating leads, qualifying opportunities against revenue and margin targets, and converting meetings with decision-makers into new accounts. It sits within a sales team reporting upward to a Sales Director or Head of Sales. Cold calling volume, appointment booking rates, and pipeline value are the raw material this role works with every day.

2. Position Summary

As the Business Development Consultant, you convert prospecting activity into a qualified pipeline of B2B opportunities by engaging decision-makers, preparing commercial proposals, and closing new business against defined revenue and margin targets. You operate within an assigned territory or account base, working in close coordination with the sales leadership and internal support functions to ensure pipeline commitments translate into contracted revenue.

3. Why Join Us

Career Impact: Owning the full prospecting-to-close cycle at the individual contributor level gives you a verifiable track record, measured in signed accounts and pipeline value, that is directly portable across B2B commercial sales markets.

Business Impact: The proposals and meetings this role generates feed the revenue pipeline that the Sales Director presents to leadership; gaps in appointment volume or lead quality surface immediately in forecast reviews.

Growth Opportunity: Consistent performance against monthly activity targets and annual revenue budgets is the clearest path to a senior sales or account management position, where deal complexity and contract size typically increase substantially.

4. Key Responsibilities

  • Prospect new B2B accounts through cold calling, warm lead follow-up, and targeted outreach to reach annual appointment volume targets.
  • Qualify each opportunity against revenue and margin criteria before booking meetings with the Sales Director or attending independently.
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of three to five owned lead sources that generate a consistent flow of direct opportunities.
  • Prepare commercial proposals and supplier agreements tailored to each prospect's stated business needs and budget.
  • Build a qualified pipeline sufficient to meet monthly activity targets and annual revenue and margin budgets.
  • Monitor competitor positioning and market trends to sharpen the value proposition in client-facing conversations.
  • Update the sales database with post-meeting notes, next actions, and pipeline stage changes to maintain forecast accuracy.
  • Report pipeline status and sales forecasts to the Head of Sales on a regular cadence to align territory priorities.

5. Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Commerce, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3 or more years of B2B sales or business development experience, with a demonstrated record of meeting or exceeding revenue targets.
  • Proven ability to generate appointments through cold calling and to convert those appointments into a qualified pipeline.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to construct client-facing proposals that reflect prospect objectives.
  • Competency in negotiating commercial terms and closing new business at the decision-maker level.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise a high-volume outbound workload with minimal direct supervision.
  • Clean driving licence and access to a vehicle for client meetings within an assigned territory.

6. Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience selling to C-suite or senior executive stakeholders in a consultative or solution-selling capacity.
  • Familiarity with government-funded or regulated commercial programmes (such as apprenticeship levy frameworks or PEO/HR outsourcing structures) that require advisory-style selling.
  • Prior exposure to account management responsibilities alongside new business development, including renewal negotiation and cross-sell.
  • Experience presenting to and pitching in front of multiple stakeholders in formal client meetings.

7. Success Metrics & Environment

  • Qualified appointments booked per month, tracking outbound prospecting productivity against activity targets.
  • Pipeline value by stage (£/$), measuring whether the territory funnel is sufficient to meet annual revenue budget.
  • New accounts signed per quarter, reflecting conversion rate from first meeting to closed contract.
  • Proposal-to-close ratio, indicating how well commercial proposals are calibrated to prospect requirements.
  • Lead source contribution rate, showing what proportion of pipeline originates from personally developed versus inbound sources.

8. Compensation & Benefits (US Market Benchmark)

  • Base Salary Range: $55,000 to $75,000 annually, depending on territory and experience
  • Bonus: Commission-based; OTE typically 30% to 50% above base on target attainment
  • Equity: Not typically offered at this level
  • Health Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage; employer contribution varies
  • PTO: 15 to 20 days annually, plus public holidays
  • Common Perks: Car allowance or mileage reimbursement, mobile phone, expense account for client entertainment

Figures are estimates based on general US market benchmarks and may be outdated. Adjust based on location, company size, and seniority level
