Business Development Sales Manager Job Description Template
1. About the Role
A Business Development Sales Manager in life sciences owns the commercial pipeline from first outreach through contract close. Biotech and pharmaceutical customers buy on scientific credibility as much as price, and a manager who cannot speak fluently to drug discovery workflows, synthetic biology platforms, or clinical protocols will stall in a first meeting. This role carries both a revenue quota and a technical obligation: the person must translate complex product capabilities into purchase decisions for researchers, clinicians, and procurement leads simultaneously. Geographic scope typically covers a defined territory or country cluster, with travel commitments ranging from 30 to 75 percent.
2. Position Summary
As the Business Development Sales Manager, you are accountable for building and executing a territory sales strategy that moves capital equipment, consumables, or MedTech devices from prospect identification through signed contracts, with direct impact on commercial launch revenue and market share. You operate within a matrix of marketing, product management, and customer success teams, reporting to a regional or divisional sales director who sets quota targets and oversees pipeline forecasting.
3. Why Join Us
Career Impact: Proven success selling complex capital equipment or clinical devices to pharma, biotech, or hospital accounts is one of the most transferable credentials in life sciences commercial careers, opening paths to senior regional director or VP of Sales roles.
Business Impact: Clinicians and researchers depend on the products and services you close to run diagnostic procedures, conduct drug discovery programs, or treat patients; delayed deals have direct downstream consequences for both lab output and patient access.
Growth Opportunity: Managing a full commercial territory across a product portfolio that spans capital equipment and consumables builds the multi-cycle sales expertise that qualifies you for enterprise account leadership or business unit GM roles.
4. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a territory-specific sales plan covering capital equipment, consumables, and services to meet or exceed assigned revenue quotas.
- Build long-term relationships with key stakeholders including physicians, researchers, procurement leads, and key opinion leaders across hospital and biotech accounts.
- Deliver scientific presentations and product demonstrations at customer sites, conferences, and trade shows to support adoption of novel platforms.
- Monitor the sales pipeline and provide accurate, regular forecasts to regional leadership, updating records and activity data in the CRM system.
- Partner with marketing and product management teams to relay competitive intelligence and customer feedback that informs messaging and product roadmap priorities.
- Coordinate with customer success and professional services teams to ensure post-sale onboarding, installation, and clinical support meet contracted service standards.
- Identify and qualify new commercial opportunities within the assigned territory by analyzing market structure, procurement channels, and stakeholder networks.
- Train clinical and laboratory personnel on product use, protocols, and safety requirements during and after the sales cycle.
5. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in life sciences, pharmacy, biomedical engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 5 or more years of B2B sales or business development experience in life sciences, MedTech, pharma, or biotech, with a consistent record of meeting or exceeding quota.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct technical sales conversations involving molecular biology methods, clinical workflows, or capital equipment specifications.
- Experience managing a complex, multi-stakeholder sales cycle from prospecting through contract execution and post-sale support.
- Familiarity with regulatory and compliance requirements relevant to clinical or laboratory product commercialization in the target geography.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to present effectively to both scientific and executive-level audiences.
- Ability to travel 30 to 75 percent of the time within an assigned territory or region.
- Proficiency with CRM platforms for pipeline tracking, activity reporting, and forecasting.
6. Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (MBA, MSc, or PhD) in a life sciences discipline or business administration with a life sciences focus.
- Direct experience with drug discovery workflows, synthetic biology platforms, DNA synthesis, PCR, or capital equipment commercialization in a pharma or biotech environment.
- Established professional network among hospital procurement leads, principal investigators, or key opinion leaders in a relevant clinical or research specialty.
- Background in MedTech clinical sales with hands-on experience supporting cases or training medical personnel in a hospital setting.
7. Success Metrics & Environment
- Revenue attainment rate against assigned quota, tracked monthly and quarterly across the territory portfolio.
- Sales pipeline coverage ratio, measuring the volume of qualified opportunities relative to the quota period target.
- New account acquisition count per quarter, distinguishing net-new logos from expansion within existing accounts.
- Time-to-close on capital equipment deals, reflecting efficiency across the multi-step technical sales cycle.
- Post-installation training completion rate, confirming clinical or lab staff are certified before independent product use.
- Typical tools: CRM platform (commonly Salesforce or HubSpot); scientific presentation software; territory mapping and routing tools.
8. Compensation & Benefits (US Market Benchmark)
- Base Salary Range: $90,000 – $135,000 depending on territory and seniority
- Bonus: Variable commission structure; on-target earnings typically 30–50% above base
- Equity: Stock options or RSUs common at growth-stage MedTech and biotech companies
- Health Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage; employer contribution standard
