Business Development Engineer Job Description Template
1. About the Role
As renewable energy procurement shifts from pilot programs toward utility-scale infrastructure investment, technical expertise alone no longer closes deals; someone must navigate the full arc from Greenfield site identification to financial close and plant commissioning. That gap belongs to the Business Development Engineer. This role operates within energy services firms and independent power developers, owning the commercial relationship across long sales cycles governed by RFP and concession-contract processes. Success here requires reading a P&ID as fluently as a project finance model.
2. Position Summary
The mandate of the Business Development Engineer is to originate, qualify, and advance energy project opportunities, spanning clean energy technology deployment, infrastructure investment, and Energy Performance Contracting, from initial outreach through signed agreements. The role sits within a commercial or business development team, working alongside technical, financial, and operational advisors to carry opportunities through development milestones and into implementation.
3. Why Join Us
Career Impact: Engineers who close RFP-driven energy contracts across geothermal, biodiesel, and efficiency financing gain a market profile that travels across both the technical and commercial sides of the clean energy sector.
Business Impact: The projects this role advances directly determine whether clients reduce their energy costs through performance contracting or whether developers bring new renewable fuel capacity online, outcomes measured in MW, tonnes of displaced biomass, or documented EPC savings.
Growth Opportunity: Consistent deal origination in long-cycle energy markets builds the project finance modeling fluency and concession-contract negotiation experience that positions engineers for Associate Director-level commercial roles or independent developer mandates.
Company Value: These roles typically sit within mission-driven organizations navigating a rapidly evolving industry, where the ability to learn fast and operate with minimal supervision is both expected and rewarded.
4. Key Responsibilities
- Originate and qualify new project opportunities in clean energy and energy services markets through cold outreach, RFP monitoring, and industry events.
- Lead client-facing needs analysis meetings to define project scope, financing structures, and expected performance outcomes.
- Develop and present technical proposals, cost estimates, and Energy Performance Contract structures tailored to each client's infrastructure profile.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary internal teams, including engineering, finance, and project operations, to advance opportunities through development milestones.
- Manage the full RFP response process, including proposal writing, compliance review, and submission against competitive procurement deadlines.
- Support plant commissioning and technical handover activities for clients or joint venture partners, ensuring deliverables meet agreed specifications.
- Monitor target market segments, including commercial real estate, government, and industrial end-users, to track competitor activity and emerging procurement opportunities.
- Prepare investment budgets, pipeline reports, and project status updates for senior management and external stakeholders.
5. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, or process), business, or equivalent work experience.
- 5 or more years of business development or technical sales experience, with direct exposure to energy services, clean energy technology, or infrastructure investment.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret process flow diagrams (PFDs) and process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
- Experience preparing and managing responses to formal RFPs and competitive procurement processes.
- Strong financial literacy, including the ability to develop project cost models and interpret investment return frameworks.
- Effective communication skills across technical and executive audiences, with demonstrated experience presenting to senior stakeholders.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regionally or internationally as project development requires.
6. Preferred Qualifications
- MBA or postgraduate qualification with a finance or project management focus.
- Hands-on experience with plant startup, shutdown, or commissioning in a chemical, energy, or process engineering environment.
- Knowledge of concession contract structures, MOU negotiations, or project finance documentation in cross-border or Latin American markets.
- Background in building systems, HVAC, or heat pump technologies relevant to energy efficiency project development.
7. Success Metrics & Environment
- New project opportunities originated per quarter, measured against annual pipeline targets.
- RFP win rate, reflecting proposal quality and technical-commercial alignment with client requirements.
- Time from initial outreach to signed agreement, tracking efficiency across the full development cycle.
- Number of plant commissioning milestones achieved on schedule, reflecting technical delivery accountability.
- Value of Energy Performance Contract savings documented per client engagement, expressed in annual cost reduction.
- Typical tools: project finance modeling platforms (commonly Excel with VBA or Python); CRM systems (commonly Salesforce); proposal and document management tools.
8. Compensation & Benefits (US Market Benchmark)
- Base Salary Range: $90,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on seniority and market
- Bonus: Performance-based, typically 10% to 20% of base tied to deal origination and close
