Assistant Marketing Manager Job Description Template
1. About the Role
An Assistant Marketing Manager in CPG or FMCG is the person who turns a brand plan into shipped product. The role owns day-to-day brand execution, moving innovation projects from brief through commercialization while keeping PFME budgets reconciled and sell-in materials current for retail and foodservice accounts. Few junior roles in consumer goods demand this range: one week you are pulling IRI category data to pressure-test a pricing recommendation, the next you are reviewing packaging artwork against brand guidelines before it goes to print. What makes it hard is the matrix: hitting launch milestones requires constant alignment with R&D, sales, finance, and external agencies simultaneously.
2. Position Summary
As the Assistant Marketing Manager, you are accountable for executing the annual brand plan across innovation, renovation, and consumer promotion workstreams, ensuring each initiative lands on time, on budget, and in line with brand positioning. You work within a cross-functional brand team that typically reports into a Senior Marketing Manager or Brand Manager, coordinating across sales, product development, and trade marketing to deliver consistent in-market results.
3. Why Join Us
Career Impact: Owning end-to-end commercialization of new SKUs within a major CPG portfolio builds the brand-management fluency that Senior Brand Manager and Marketing Manager roles require.
Business Impact: The work you deliver directly determines which products reach retail shelves, how they are priced at key accounts, and whether innovation pipeline forecasts hold- outcomes that move market share in competitive FMCG categories.
Growth Opportunity: Exposure to PFME budget ownership, IRI/syndicated data analysis, and retailer sell-in strategy accelerates readiness for full P&L accountability at the Brand Manager level.
4. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute annual brand marketing plans, including innovation, renovation, and consumer promotion workstreams, aligned to business targets and approved budgets.
- Manage PFME budget tracking and conduct pre- and post-program evaluations to assess ROI against established KPIs.
- Lead commercialization of new and improved products, coordinating packaging artwork approvals, copywriting direction, and launch timelines across internal and agency partners.
- Analyze syndicated category data and consumer insights to recommend marketing objectives, pricing adjustments, and portfolio innovation opportunities.
- Prepare and present brand plan components to management, cross-functional teams, and external retail and foodservice partners.
- Coordinate forecasting inputs and SKU-level inventory management to maintain consistent stock levels across the product portfolio.
- Develop sales tools, promotional displays, and sell-in materials in partnership with the sales organization and trade marketing teams.
- Monitor competitive activity and market trends to identify gaps and recommend tactical adjustments to the annual plan.
5. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 2 or more years of marketing experience in a CPG, FMCG, or foodservice environment, with hands-on brand execution responsibilities.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously against tight deadlines in a matrix organization.
- Experience analyzing syndicated market data or consumer research to develop actionable business recommendations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing and presenting materials to cross-functional stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage and reconcile marketing budgets, including tracking spend against approved project-level allocations.
- Solid understanding of the 4Ps and their application to brand planning, promotional strategy, and retail execution.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with external agencies, vendors, and cross-functional teams to deliver projects on time and within scope.
6. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in foodservice channel marketing or working alongside distributors and key account partners.
- Familiarity with commercialization processes specific to CPG innovation pipelines, from ideation through retail launch.
- Exposure to loyalty, CRM, or consumer promotion mechanics within a branded consumer goods context.
- Advanced proficiency in data analysis using spreadsheet applications, including pivot tables, SUMIFS, and VLOOKUP functions.
7. Success Metrics & Environment
- PFME budget variance, measuring how accurately spend is tracked and managed against approved project allocations.
- On-time launch rate for innovation and renovation projects, reflecting execution discipline across the commercialization cycle.
- Pre- and post-promotional ROI delta, measuring whether evaluated programs exceeded or missed KPI benchmarks.
- Retail sell-in rate for new SKUs, reflecting how effectively developed materials and presentations converted distributor or buyer commitment.
- Forecast accuracy at the SKU level, measuring alignment between projected and actual inventory consumption across accounts.
- Typical tools: syndicated data platforms (commonly IRI or Nielsen); project management and collaboration software (commonly Microsoft Office suite or Google Workspace).
8. Compensation & Benefits (US Market Benchmark)
- Base Salary Range: $60,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on experience and market
- Bonus: Annual performance bonus, typically 8% to 12% of base salary
- Equity: Equity is uncommon at this level; rare in large CPG companies
- Health Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage; employer contribution standard
