Accounting Controller Job Description Template

1. About the Role

General ledger accuracy is not a background task. When monthly closes slip, budget variance reports go unsigned, and fixed asset records drift from reality, the downstream cost to finance leadership and external auditors compounds fast. The Accounting Controller is the individual who holds those processes to a standard, owning the full close cycle, internal controls framework, and financial statement preparation for the organization. This seat typically spans AP, AR, payroll, and fixed assets simultaneously, requiring both technical GAAP fluency and the supervisory range to develop accounting staff.

2. Position Summary

As the Accounting Controller, you will own the monthly and annual financial close, ensure GAAP-compliant reporting across all business segments, and serve as the primary point of accountability between operational finance and external audit. You will report to senior finance or operations leadership while supervising an accounting team responsible for day-to-day transaction processing and reconciliations.

Career Impact: Mastery of the percentage-of-completion method, fixed asset capitalization, and SOX-adjacent internal controls marks an Accounting Controller as audit-ready at any company size, a credential that opens doors to Controller and VP Finance roles.

Business Impact: The financial statements this role produces are the basis on which General Managers, lenders, and boards make capital and operating decisions, making accuracy here a direct input to organizational solvency and credibility.
