AGILE SCRUM MASTER JOB DESCRIPTION
Real-world Agile Scrum Master JDs spanning sprint ceremonies, Product Owner collaboration, SAFe frameworks, metrics tracking, and cross-team coordination.

Agile Scrum Master Job Description Template
1. About the Role
Scrum without someone accountable for its integrity drifts fast, ceremonies become status meetings, backlogs grow stale, and sprint commitments slip until no one trusts the plan. The Agile Scrum Master holds that accountability, serving as the team's process owner within software product development organizations that rely on iterative delivery across web, mobile, and enterprise platforms. This is not a coordination role that manages schedules from the outside; it demands deep command of frameworks, including Scrum, Kanban, and SAFe, applied daily inside multi-disciplinary teams that include Product Owners, engineers, QA, and DevOps. Measurable outcomes, sprint velocity, burn-down accuracy, and impediment resolution rate define performance here.
2. Position Summary
As the Agile Scrum Master, you own the health of Scrum team processes across a portfolio of software delivery initiatives, coaching teams, and Product Owners on Agile values, removing impediments, and ensuring sprint ceremonies produce decisions rather than delay. You operate within a technology organization alongside Product Owners, engineering leads, and Agile Coaches, with accountability to delivery metrics reported upward to PMO or senior product leadership.
3. Why Join Us
Career Impact: Sustained experience serving as a full-time Scrum Master on multi-team software portfolios, particularly at the ART or SAFe level, is one of the clearest paths to Release Train Engineer or Agile Coach roles that command significantly higher market value.
Business Impact: When sprint velocity stabilizes and burn-down charts reflect reality, engineering teams ship software on schedule; this role is the reason that predictability exists for product managers and business stakeholders counting on it.
Growth Opportunity: Exposure to enterprise Agile frameworks, cross-team dependency management, and ART Syncs builds the breadth of skills that differentiate a Scrum Master ready for program-level or coaching responsibilities from one capped at single-team facilitation.
4. Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate all Scrum ceremonies, sprint planning, daily stand-up, review, and retrospective, to ensure decisions replace discussion.
- Coach Scrum teams and Product Owners on Agile values, backlog prioritization, and estimation practices to increase delivery predictability.
- Remove impediments at the team and cross-team levels, escalating blockers through Scrum-of-Scrums when inter-team dependencies are involved.
- Monitor and report sprint velocity, burn-down charts, and team maturity metrics to Product Owners and senior stakeholders on a regular cadence.
- Represent teams in ART Syncs and program-level ceremonies, coordinating objectives and dependencies across multiple squads or Agile Release Trains.
- Guide continuous improvement by identifying process gaps during retrospectives and tracking the adoption of agreed changes across subsequent sprints.
- Manage backlog health by reviewing and updating in-progress items to ensure accurate work status is visible to all stakeholders at all times.
5. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Three or more years of full-time Scrum Master experience, with demonstrated ownership of Scrum processes on software delivery teams.
- Active Scrum Master certification at CSM, PSM I, or equivalent first-level standard.
- Solid knowledge of Agile frameworks, including Scrum, Kanban, and SAFe, with the ability to apply them appropriately to team context.
- Proven ability to facilitate ceremonies and decision-making sessions across stakeholders at multiple organizational levels.
- Demonstrated skill in tracking and communicating team metrics, including velocity, burn-down, and impediment logs.
- Ability to influence team behavior and drive accountability without formal management authority.
6. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting teams within SAFe at the program or large-solution level, including ART planning events and PI objectives.
- Familiarity with software development practices such as continuous integration, test-driven development, and iterative release management.
- SAFe Agilist, PSM II, or equivalent advanced certification.
- Background coordinating distributed or multi-hub teams across time zones, with experience managing the communication overhead this creates.
7. Success Metrics & Environment
- Sprint velocity stability measures how consistently the team meets its own forecast across consecutive sprints.
- Burn-down accuracy rate, reflecting how closely actual completion tracks the planned sprint commitment line.
- Impediment resolution time in days, tracking how quickly blockers are cleared from the moment they are raised.
- Retrospective action adoption rate, measuring the percentage of agreed improvements implemented in the following sprint.
- Backlog health score, reflecting the currency and completeness of in-progress and upcoming items at any given point in time.
- Typical tools: Agile project tracking (commonly Jira or Azure DevOps); documentation and collaboration (commonly Confluence)
8. Compensation & Benefits (US Market Benchmark)
- Base Salary Range: $95,000 to $135,000 annually, varying by team scope and seniority
- Bonus: Annual performance bonus of 5% to 12% of base salary
- Equity: RSUs or stock options offered at mid-to-large technology employers
- Health Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage; employer covers the majority of premiums
- PTO: 15 to 20 days annually, plus public holidays and sick leave
