Solutions Architect Job Description Template

1. About the Role

A Solutions Architect who cannot translate technical architecture into a purchase decision leaves enterprise deals stalled and implementation timelines undefined. This role owns the technical relationship with B2B buyers from pre-sales discovery through post-sale onboarding, holding the customer's trust across both the evaluation cycle and live deployment. In SaaS environments, that span is unusually wide: the same person who shapes a Statement of Work may later run enablement sessions with a client's development team. The role reports into a customer success or sales engineering function and is measured against account health and solution adoption, not just deal closure.

2. Position Summary

As the Solutions Architect, you own the technical dimension of revenue and retention for a portfolio of enterprise SaaS accounts, designing architectures, guiding onboarding, and advising customers on configurations that maximize platform value. You collaborate daily with Account Executives, Product, and Engineering, and your work determines whether customers expand their usage or stall before realizing value.

3. Why Join Us

Career Impact: Solutions Architects who develop deep expertise in enterprise SaaS pre-sales and post-sale technical advisory become highly sought candidates for Principal Architect and VP of Solutions Engineering roles within three to five years.

Business Impact: When a customer's implementation fails or a proof-of-concept goes unconvincing, the deal does not close and the account does not renew — this role is the person who prevents both outcomes for the company's largest accounts.

Growth Opportunity: Exposure to diverse enterprise customer stacks, from omnichannel contact center platforms to big data analytics deployments, compounds your architectural range faster than any single-product engineering role.

Company Value: Several employers in this space offer catered meals, quarterly off-site events, and cell phone allowances, reflecting a culture that invests in the in-person and community dimensions of a largely client-facing role.

4. Key Responsibilities

  • Design solution architectures for enterprise customer environments, translating business requirements into implementable technical plans.
  • Lead technical onboarding sessions with new customers, spanning initial installation through advanced configuration and enablement.
  • Conduct pre-sales discovery and deliver technical proposals and demos tailored to each prospect's stack and business objectives.
  • Partner with Account Executives to qualify opportunities, respond to RFPs, and produce Statements of Work that accurately scope delivery.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering to surface customer feedback and advocate for platform improvements that reduce implementation friction.
  • Review customer implementations for configuration quality, observing usage patterns and proactively engaging accounts showing adoption risk.
  • Develop reference architectures, how-to guides, and enablement content that scale best practices across the customer base.

5. Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5 or more years of experience in solutions engineering, technical pre-sales, or customer-facing architecture roles, with demonstrated ownership of enterprise accounts.
  • Ability to design and communicate solution architectures to both technical and executive audiences, including live whiteboarding and written technical proposals.
  • Experience evaluating and integrating third-party systems within enterprise customer environments to support end-to-end solution delivery.
  • Competency in web application architecture including API design, service integration patterns, and authentication standards at an enterprise scale.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple customer engagements concurrently without loss of detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across go-to-market and engineering functions, translating customer needs into actionable product feedback.

6. Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with big data platforms, cloud data warehousing, or analytics infrastructure in a customer deployment context.
  • Background in enterprise application development, including front-end frameworks, relational and non-relational databases, and modern API patterns, enabling credible technical guidance without active coding.
  • Familiarity with Customer Experience or contact center technology ecosystems, including workforce optimization, omnichannel routing, or CTI concepts, relevant to B2B SaaS deployments in service-intensive industries.
  • Experience supporting product-led growth motions, including proactive usage monitoring and data-driven customer health scoring.

7. Success Metrics & Environment

  • Solution adoption rate per account, measuring how fully customers implement recommended configurations within 90 days of onboarding.
  • Technical win rate on evaluated opportunities, reflecting the strength of architecture presentations and proof-of-concept outcomes.
  • Time-to-value for new customers, tracking days from contract signature to confirmed first successful use case in production.
  • Customer health score trend across managed portfolio, indicating whether accounts are expanding or contracting usage over rolling quarters.
  • Reference architecture reuse rate, measuring how often published guides replace custom per-customer design work.
  • Typical tools: diagramming and architecture documentation (commonly Lucidchart or Visio); customer success platforms (commonly Gainsight or Salesforce).

8. Compensation & Benefits (US Market Benchmark)

  • Base Salary Range: $130,000 to $175,000 annually, varying by geography and account tier.
  • Bonus: Variable component of 15 to 25% of base, tied to quota attainment and account health metrics.
  • Equity: RSUs or options common at growth-stage SaaS employers; less standard at large enterprises.
  • Health Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage; employer contribution rates vary by company size.
  • PTO: 15 to 20 days annually; unlimited PTO increasingly common in SaaS.
  • Common Perks: Home office stipend, cell phone allowance, annual learning budget, and quarterly team events.

Figures are estimates based on general US market benchmarks and may be outdated. Adjust based on location, company size, and seniority level.

9. EEO & Legal
