An Overview of Dental Assistant Job Description Responsibilities and Qualifications

1. A Dental Assistant supports and assists providers with patient care. It is essential to be able to lead, be flexible, friendly, have an energetic personality and work efficiently. In addition, a Dental Assistant must display open communication to co-workers and a commitment to patient satisfaction. The Dental Assistant's primary responsibilities are to provide the patient with quality care and to provide the doctor with quality assistance on patient procedures. The Dental Assistant has direct responsibility for the patient's excellent experience and patient retention.

Dental Assistant Functions:

  • Understand and demonstrate proper sterilization, biohazard and infection control procedures in compliance with protocols.
  • Follow OSHA and company safety policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate proficient knowledge of dental terminology.
  • Perform all chairside procedures efficiently.
  • Assist the doctor with all dental procedures including but not limited to, take directions from doctor, anticipate doctor's needs, performing patient oral evaluations.
  • Efficiently direct patient flow through teamwork and communication.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of dental instruments and proper tray setups.
  • Properly expose, develop and mount all radiographs.
  • Perform all necessary lab procedures.
  • Review patient chart prior to doctor arrival and log appropriate patient data during exam and treatment as well as transcribe doctor notes in patient chart
  • Responsible for stocking treatment areas/carts and dental related facility inventory.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality through HIPAA compliance.
  • Verify patient health history (basic health review, medications, understanding impact with dentistry) and document appropriately in the patient's chart.
  • Clean and prepare operatory per company procedures prior to patient appointment.
  • Sterilize equipment and operatories per OSHA guidelines.
  • Patient/staff rapport - make positive contributions to office/organization.
  • Promote and market the company's services, retail products and doctors to patients as well as educate patients and address their questions and/or concerns.


Dental Assistant Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Completion of a two-year certified dental assistant program
  • Radiology certification
  • Nitrous oxide monitoring certification
  • Current dental assistant license is required in certain states
  • Experience with special needs and medically compromised populations preferred but not required
  • One year’s experience preferred
  • Current American Heart Association approved CPR certification
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of dental equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to perform basic computer functions.

Dental Assistant Duties:

  • Prepare and assist the dentist with performing routine and specialty care.
  • Taking a patient's medical history and recording it for Dentist’s review.
  • Take x-rays and impressions of the patient's teeth.
  • Demonstrates and teaches patients methods of maintaining oral health.
  • Maintain regular contact with the Dentist to exchange information, solve problems, discuss planning and direction of dental services.
  • Perform essential work within Electronic Health Record system and program data entry systems with a high degree of accuracy and completeness
  •  Willingness to cover front office duties as needed.
  • Assist staff in scheduling patients' follow up visits.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing work schedule.
  • Assist with cleaning of front office areas as needed.
  • Follow up with labs to ensure quality and timely products.
  • Track incoming and outgoing lab cases with staff.


Dental Assistant Education and Experience:

  • Knowledgeable of HIPAA and OSHA regulations
  • Communicate in a culturally competent and effective manner to clients/caregivers regarding the services available
  • Dental Assistant experience - 2 years minimum of work or proven volunteer experience in dental field
  • Dental assistant training or equivalent dental training
  • Good keyboard skills - 35 wpm
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress
  • Detailed oriented and organized
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills

Dental Lab Assistant Functions:

  • Complies with all Federal, State, accreditation and institutional policies and procedures
  • Support instructors work with and help students in the performance of required lab procedures as per the curriculum, this includes meeting with students individually or in a group basis to give learning assistance.
  • Communicate with the instructor and DOE about the student’s progress.
  • Cleans, sterilize and maintain laboratory instruments, equipment and the laboratory
  • Inventory, and restock.
  • Performs related lab skills demonstrations including laboratory preparation and scheduling student procedures including lab check-offs.
  •  Perform basic computer function including electronic dental record.
  • Demonstrate cost effective techniques when utilizing supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to creatively work with providers to adjust treatment based on the patient's ability to cooperate.
  • Willingness to work in an operating room environment to provide dental care
  • Familiarity with all facets of general dentistry along with oral surgery


Dental Lab Assistant Education and Experience:

  • Must have a Dental Assistant Diploma from a nationally accredited school and be a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) and have worked 2 consecutive years within the last 5years as a dental assistant.
  • Must be certified in basic life support procedures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Must have Pit and Fissure Sealants completed a board-approved course in the application of pit and fissure sealants.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the subject matter
  • Be able to effectively explain concepts to others including demonstrating proper lab techniques
  • Work comfortably with people with diverse backgrounds
  • Comply with protocols and standards.
  • Ability to recognize common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Exercise knowledge of dental instruments and terminology.
