WHAT IS A CONTROLLER/ACCOUNTING MANAGER ?

The Controller/Accounting Manager is tasked with leading and overseeing all financial functions of the company. This includes the management and oversight of Accounts Payable, billing procedures, reporting, contracts, and ensuring compliance with state and local government requirements. This role is crucial in maintaining financial health by ensuring adherence to all billing compliance before submissions, and by developing, implementing, and maintaining efficient accounting systems, procedures, and policies in line with company guidelines and policy.

Need-to-Know Overview of a Controller/Accounting Manager

1. Controller/Accounting Manager Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide management with daily, weekly and monthly reports to drive business results.
  • Responsible for overseeing monthly journal entries, bank reconciliations and account analysis.
  • Responsible for coordinating, preparing, and reviewing all aspects of year-end financial audits.
  • Use measurement/reporting to drive business goals such as excess expense out of the business.
  • Review time and attendance and payroll process for complete accuracy.
  • Coordinate all insurance coverage and ensure cost-effectiveness and adequate coverage.
  • Preparation of annual federal tax return.
  • Manage the preparation and distribution of monthly reporting.
  • Manage the Accounts Payable process and ensure vendors are paid on a timely basis.
  • Manage banking relationships and related account administration.
  • Make sure that proper internal controls are adhered to and that appropriate accounting procedure are followed.
  • Contribute to department and organization special projects as assigned.
  • Oversee Finance staff including hiring, coaching, training, development, and performance management of staff.

2. Controller/Accounting Manager Skills, Experience, Qualifications

  • Must ensure the smooth interaction of finance functions with those of other operational and management areas such as: human resources, information technology, and facilities.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule when needed.
  • Payroll processing experience
  • Proficient in QuickBooks
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws governing benefits administration practices
  • Knowledge of retirement plans
  • Minimum 5+ years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Accounting or Finance
  • MBA and/or CPA preferred
