Project Analyst Job Description Template
1. About the Role
A Project Analyst in corporate finance keeps two things honest at once: the numbers on the ledger and the process that produces them. Where SOX compliance governs how financial data is controlled and reported, this role owns the operational layer that makes governance real - reconciling accounts, managing purchase order integrity, and translating ERP system behavior into corrective action. The work spans procurement-to-pay cycles and finance system implementations that affect business units across an enterprise. No two weeks are identical.
2. Position Summary
As the Project Analyst, you execute the financial transaction management and process oversight that keeps corporate finance operations accurate, compliant, and on schedule across budget cycles and system change events. You work within a finance or financial systems team, partnering with business unit leads, IT, and external vendors to maintain forecast integrity, resolve payment issues, and support ERP governance requirements.
3. Why Join Us
Career Impact: Hands-on ownership of procurement-to-pay execution and ERP reconciliation builds the financial operations depth that distinguishes candidates for Senior Analyst and Finance Manager roles in corporate environments.
Business Impact: When invoice coding errors, missing Goods Receipts, or out-of-funds purchase orders go unresolved, business units lose purchasing capacity and audits surface control failures - this role prevents both.
Growth Opportunity: Exposure to SOX compliance frameworks, multi-entity ERP environments, and cross-functional finance system implementations expands your market value toward financial systems consulting and corporate controller tracks.
4. Key Responsibilities
- Review purchase order accuracy, invoice documentation, and coding against procurement policy to ensure compliant payment processing.
- Validate Goods Receipt status for outstanding invoices and obtain approvals to unblock vendor payments within established timelines.
- Reconcile accounts receivable and deferred revenue balances against forecast and provide variance commentary to finance leadership.
- Coordinate with IT and ERP support teams to escalate system errors, remediate interface failures, and implement configuration changes.
- Develop and maintain project plans covering scope, schedule, risk identification, and resource allocation for assigned finance system workstreams.
- Monitor project progress against milestones, quantify variances, and communicate corrective actions to stakeholders and program managers.
- Support change management activities for system rollouts including testing scripts, training materials, and post-go-live user support.
- Identify procurement process improvement opportunities and propose solutions that reduce payment cycle time or strengthen internal controls.
5. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, or equivalent work experience.
- 2 or more years of financial transaction management experience, with demonstrated ownership of procurement or accounts payable processes.
- Working knowledge of Procure-to-Pay workflows including purchase requisitions, purchase order creation, invoice validation, and payment processing.
- Experience reconciling accounts with documented explanations for each reconciling item, including deferred revenue and unbilled receivables.
- Familiarity with SOX compliance requirements and the internal controls that govern financial reporting in publicly accountable organizations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to identify root causes of payment or system discrepancies and drive resolution.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with ability to convey financial data clearly to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
6. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting ERP implementation or enhancement projects including user acceptance testing and cutover coordination.
- Prior exposure to capital versus operating expense classification rules for internal software development or infrastructure projects.
- Professional certification in project management such as PMP or equivalent, or active pursuit of CPA or CMA designation.
- Experience developing variance analysis commentary and financial performance metrics for monthly or quarterly management reporting.
7. Success Metrics and Environment
- Purchase order error rate, measuring how often POs require correction or rework before payment can proceed.
- Invoice processing cycle time in days, reflecting how efficiently the role moves validated invoices to approval and payment.
- Goods Receipt completion rate, tracking the percentage of outstanding GRs resolved within the agreed service window.
- Forecast variance percentage per period, indicating how closely managed project budgets track against approved financial plans.
- SOX control exception count per audit cycle, measuring adherence to governance requirements across owned financial processes.
- Typical tools: ERP financial systems (commonly SAP S/4HANA or similar); project portfolio management software (commonly MS Project or similar); reporting platforms (commonly Business Objects or similar)
8. Compensation and Benefits (US Market Benchmark)
- Base Salary Range: $62,000 to $88,000 per year depending on experience and location.
- Bonus: Annual performance bonus of 5 to 10 percent of base salary, typical for corporate finance roles.
