Principal Architect Job Description Template
1. About the Role
Governance without ownership is noise. When no one holds final authority over architecture standards, enterprises accumulate technical debt faster than teams can retire it, and cloud migrations stall at the proof-of-concept stage. The Principal Architect owns that authority. Sitting above the Solution Architect tier and reporting into technology leadership, this role sets the enterprise-wide direction for application, data, and cloud architecture across regulated, large-scale environments. A TOGAF-aligned governance body such as an Architecture Review Board typically answers to this seat.
2. Position Summary

You work across product owners, Solution Architects, information security, and engineering leadership to translate strategic intent into governed, deliverable architecture.
3. Why Join Us
Career Impact: Owning the Architecture Review Board and technology roadmap at enterprise scale establishes you as the senior decision-maker that product and engineering teams rely on for cloud and platform direction.
Business Impact: The architecture governance this role enforces directly reduces technical debt accumulation and shortens the time between strategic decisions and production-ready solutions across the enterprise.
Growth Opportunity: Deep exposure to acquisition due diligence, multi-cloud platform strategy, and enterprise-wide standards development positions you for Chief Architect or VP of Engineering advancement.
