CAD Design Engineer Job Description Template
1. About the Role
A CAD Design Engineer translates product and process requirements into precise engineering drawings, BOMs and build documentation. Not every manufacturer can afford a drawing error in production - a misspecified weld joint or a missing tolerance callout on a BOM can stop a fabrication line or trigger a costly rework cycle. This role owns the drawing office function within a manufacturing environment, working to BS8888 or ASME Y14.5 draughting standards and holding responsibility for configuration control under ISO 9001. The CAD Design Engineer sits within or alongside the engineering team, fielding input from production, procurement and sales to keep design output accurate and current.
2. Position Summary
As the CAD Design Engineer, you will own the creation, revision and release of engineering drawings and BOMs that directly govern what gets built on the shop floor, ensuring documentation remains aligned with configuration control standards at every program stage. You will work within a manufacturing design office, collaborating with production supervisors, procurement staff and project engineers to translate internal and customer requirements into compliant, buildable design packages.
3. Why Join Us
Career Impact: Demonstrated experience holding the drawing office function to BS8888 or ASME Y14.5 standards is a recognised differentiator when progressing toward Senior Design Engineer or Lead Engineer roles in UK and US manufacturing markets.
Business Impact: When BOMs and engineering drawings are accurate and released on time, fabrication teams build to specification on the first attempt - errors caught at this stage prevent rework costs that can run into significant production delays.
Growth Opportunity: Exposure to design for manufacture, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and configuration control across a product range builds the technical breadth that supports a move into a Lead CAD or Principal Engineer position.
4. Key Responsibilities
- Create and control engineering drawings, BOMs and design documentation to recognised configuration control standards across the full product range.
- Revise and update existing documentation to reflect design changes, obsolescence updates and new build requirements in a timely manner.
- Apply knowledge of engineering materials, finishes and joining techniques to assess and maintain ageing design records.
- Liaise with production, procurement and sales teams to capture drawing and specification requirements and incorporate them into released documentation.
- Conduct site surveys or design reviews to gather dimensional and installation data needed to develop accurate drawing packages.
- Calculate and validate component sizing based on engineering principles, tolerances and design for manufacture best practices.
- Mentor or support junior draughtspeople, providing technical feedback to maintain drawing office standards.
- Monitor completed layouts and drawing packages for clarity, completeness and conformity to standards before release.
5. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering or a closely related field, or equivalent work experience in a design or drawing office environment.
- 2 or more years of CAD design engineering experience within a manufacturing or industrial engineering setting, with demonstrated output of released drawing packages.
- Working knowledge of engineering materials including metals, their specifications, surface finishes and joining techniques such as fasteners and welding.
- Ability to draught to BS8888 or ASME Y14.5 standards, including application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Understanding of design for manufacture and design for assembly principles, with exposure to configuration control processes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical requirements across production, procurement and sales functions.
- Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD draughting, with experience managing drawing revisions and BOM accuracy within a PDM or vault environment.
6. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working to ISO 9001 quality management standards within a design or production environment.
- Exposure to NC programming or CAM software, supporting the link between design output and CNC fabrication.
- Background in the food processing, defence or industrial automation sectors, where bespoke machine builds and stringent documentation standards are common.
- Familiarity with health and safety risk assessment processes as they apply to design decisions, including relevant legislative requirements.
7. Success Metrics and Environment
- Drawing release cycle time, measuring how quickly completed packages move from draft to approved status.
- BOM accuracy rate, tracking the proportion of released BOMs requiring post-release correction.
- Design rework incidents per quarter, reflecting the rate of drawing errors identified after handover to production.
- Documentation revision turnaround, measuring how promptly change requests are incorporated and reissued.
- Configuration control audit score, reflecting compliance with internal and recognised external draughting standards.
- Typical tools: 3D parametric CAD (commonly Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks), vault and PDM systems (commonly Autodesk Vault).
8. Compensation and Benefits (US Market Benchmark)
- Base Salary Range: $65,000 to $90,000 per year, depending on experience and location.
- Bonus: Discretionary annual bonus, typically 5 to 10 percent of base salary.
