AutoCAD Designer Job Description Template
1. About the Role
Drawing sets leave the office daily - and when they carry errors, field crews build the wrong thing. AutoCAD Designers in construction and civil engineering own the technical drawing output that connects engineering intent to physical installation, spanning disciplines from MEP systems to structural and geotechnical work. A single designer may hold drafting standards for an entire office while producing contract documents reviewed against OSHA safety codes and CDM compliance requirements. Few production roles carry this direct a line from desk to built structure.
2. Position Summary
As the AutoCAD Designer, you translate engineering calculations and design sketches into accurate, code-compliant contract and fabrication drawings that field teams and regulatory reviewers depend on to execute and approve construction projects. You sit within a design or engineering services team, working across project phases from concept layout through final as-built documentation, coordinating drawing workflows with engineers, architects, and specialist subcontractors.
3. Why Join Us
Career Impact: Producing contract documents for civil, MEP, or structural projects builds a portfolio of regulatory-reviewed work that strengthens a designer's standing in licensed engineering firms and public infrastructure clients.
Business Impact: Accurate, timely drawing sets reduce rework orders on site - when fabrication and installation drawings are wrong, field corrections cost multiples of the original drafting time.
Growth Opportunity: Exposure to geotechnical, fire protection, telecommunications, and structural disciplines within a single firm accelerates the path toward CAD Manager or senior design technician roles faster than single-discipline practices.
4. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare 2D construction drawings including plans, profiles, sections, and details to meet contract document standards and internal drafting protocols.
- Develop 3D models and renderings of complex structural, MEP, or civil features to support engineering review and client presentations.
- Maintain drawing files, version control logs, and digital archives in accordance with internal procedures and project submittal requirements.
- Coordinate drawing workflows across engineering disciplines to identify and resolve spatial conflicts before field installation.
- Review client specifications, design sketches, and survey data and incorporate findings into updated drawing sets.
- Support design managers by preparing design risk assessments and communicating residual risks to relevant project stakeholders.
- Train junior drafters on office CAD standards, drawing revision protocols, and submittal procedures.
- Attend project meetings and site surveys to gather field measurements and verify design intent against existing conditions.
5. Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree or technical certification in Drafting, Design, or a related engineering field, or equivalent work experience.
- 2 or more years of CAD drafting experience in a construction or civil engineering environment, with demonstrated ability to produce multi-discipline drawing sets.
- Working knowledge of 2D and 3D drafting principles including drawing references, data links, and file management conventions.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering sketches, blueprints, architectural drawings, and construction specifications.
- Familiarity with applicable building codes, OSHA safety requirements, and construction industry drawing standards.
- Strong attention to detail with the capacity to manage multiple active drawing sets under deadline pressure.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordination with engineers, subcontractors, and project managers.
6. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience producing drawings across more than one construction discipline, such as MEP, civil, structural, or telecommunications infrastructure.
- Background in fabrication drawing production for bespoke or custom structural elements, with site survey experience.
- Working toward or holding an industry certification relevant to the discipline, such as RCDD for telecom or equivalent technical credential.
- Exposure to BIM coordination workflows including clash detection review and model family development.
7. Success Metrics & Environment
- Drawing submittal accuracy rate, measured by the number of revision rounds required before client or regulatory approval.
- Clash detection resolution rate, tracking the percentage of spatial conflicts resolved before field installation begins.
- Drawing set delivery adherence, measured against project programme milestones for each phase of design.
- Revision turnaround time, reflecting how quickly marked-up drawings are corrected and reissued after engineer or client review.
- CAD standards compliance rate, assessed during internal drawing audits against office drafting protocols.
- Typical tools: 2D/3D CAD platforms (commonly AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D); BIM authoring (commonly Revit); coordination review (commonly Navisworks).
8. Compensation & Benefits (US Market Benchmark)
- Base Salary Range: $52,000 to $78,000 per year, depending on discipline and experience.
- Bonus: Project-completion or annual performance bonus, typically 3% to 7%.
- Equity: Not typical at this level in construction and engineering firms.
- Health Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage; employer contribution rates vary by firm size.
- PTO: 10 to 15 days annually plus standard federal holidays; some firms offer additional sick leave.
- Common Perks: Professional development reimbursement for CAD certifications, mileage for site visits, and overtime eligibility.
Figures are estimates based on general US market benchmarks and may be outdated. Adjust based on location, company size, and seniority level.
9. EEO & Legal
