As the Assistant Engineer, this role maintains the ship's propulsion machinery, mechanical and electrical systems, damage control equipment, and HAZMAT accountability, while also managing fueling, pollution control, liquid load and ballasting, and logs and record-keeping. The engineering department relies on this work to ensure all engines, pumps, and machinery remain operational, inspected, and compliant with MARPOL and USCG requirements across ocean-going tug and vessel operations.

Scope of Work

• Troubleshoot and repair all engines, pumps, machinery, deck machinery, and electrical components.
• Maintain proper markings, tags, and colour coding of various systems, and maintain general housekeeping of engineering spaces.
• Maintain onboard alarms, safety systems, and vessel parts inventory levels.
• Prepare and submit monthly engineering reports to management.
• Work on deck as needed, including handling lines and making and breaking tow.
• Supervise and train junior engineers and deckhand-engineers in maintenance and preventive maintenance procedures.
• Serve as field representative during major machinery overhauls and perform all engine room inspections within the vessel maintenance system.

Skills & Qualifications

• Must possess a valid USCG Designated Duty Engineer licence (Limited Oceans, Unlimited HP required).
• Must possess a valid STCW-III/2 endorsement.
• Must possess a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
• Strong maritime background with a thorough understanding of vessel operations and equipment capabilities and limitations.
• Knowledge of MARPOL regulations and pollution prevention procedures, and ability to safely transfer fuel and oils.
• Knowledge of maintenance and operation of bilge, ballast, fire, fresh water, and sanitary systems.
• Basic knowledge of welding, burning procedures, and hot work safety precautions.
• Ability to read and interpret technical data, specifications, and drawings.

• Ability to communicate in English across written, spoken, and listening levels.

Assistant Engineer runs the on-site engineering documentation and quality assurance functions for rail, highway, and heavy civil engineering projects, including producing as-built drawings, completing Quality Check Sheets, and maintaining accurate daily diaries and resource records. The work directly supports the handover of completed works to clients, ensuring all setting-out information, materials reconciliation, and KPI data are accurately captured and reported.

Work Activities

• Carry out associated briefings and safety inspections.

• Produce as-built drawings and records for all elements of the works.
• Complete Quality Check Sheets and produce information for Handover Documentation.

• Work to the weekly programme drafted by others and mark up progress achieved weekly.
• Contribute to the collection of data for Key Performance Indicators, including reasons for variance.
• Produce accurate daily records of resources, including labour, plant, materials, subcontractors, and outputs.

Requirements

• Experience in rail, highways, and heavy civil engineering.
• Ability to read and evaluate information from drawings, schedules, and specifications.
• Understanding of Activity Control Plans and production of resultant information for handover files.
• Strong understanding of construction tolerances and awareness of Specification and other Contract documents.
• Ability to produce detailed documentation for the handover of completed works.
• Ability to communicate safe systems of work clearly, take ownership of tasks, and work on own initiative.
• Targeting progression of professional accreditation such as ICE or IHT is desired but not essential.
• Current driving licence and CSCS Card.

Performance Expectations

• Provide engineering and technical support in analysing distribution system performance during construction and installation of water mains.
• Assist with the preparation and design of capital improvement projects.
• Research areas for potential water main improvements.
• Oversee and inspect the installation of water main by contractors while maintaining construction standards.

Experience & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• EIT certification and active pursuit of PE licensing preferred.
• 2 to 3 years of working knowledge of water supply engineering and construction experience preferred.
• Experience with AutoCAD, GIS systems, and hydraulic modelling software.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and understand contract documents.
• Ability to interface with contractors and work outdoors.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organisational skills, and proficiency in MS Office.
• Valid New York State driver's licence.

Embedded within a multidisciplinary R&D team, the Assistant Engineer works with complex electronic systems to conduct tool demonstrations, plan and run experiments, and collect customer requirements that align product development with the tool roadmap. Working closely with development groups and customer sites primarily in East Asia, this role refines the engineering solutions that create measurable value for customers in the semiconductors and advanced manufacturing space.

Technical Qualifications

Reporting to senior laboratory staff, the Assistant Engineer performs testing and evaluation of plastics-related products using analytical equipment including a microscope, FT-IR, and DSC, and prepares test reports on evaluation results. Partnering with operations teams to manage packaging sample databases and respond to emergencies, this role supports the analytical integrity and equipment readiness of a materials testing laboratory.
