Embedded within the global Polymer and Electronics Additives business segment, the Application Development Engineer develops innovative product solutions and fosters customer relationships across the Americas by providing technical input into new product concepts, supporting formulation development, and collaborating with sales, technology, and product management colleagues. Working closely with distributors, R&D teams, and marketing stakeholders, this role advances organic growth and advances the product portfolio by translating market and customer needs into differentiated offerings.
Areas of Ownership
- Provide technical input into the design of new product concepts to create differentiated value for the customer/market, with clear technical targets, strong value propositions, and validation plans.

A key member of the interconnect product development team, the Application Development Engineer/Cable Development Engineer owns full technical responsibility for planning, organizing, and conducting projects covering the design, fabrication, modification, and evaluation of electrical connectors and cable systems. Collaborating across cross-functional, multi-site engineering, sales, product management, and manufacturing teams, this role ensures that custom connector and cable solutions meet customer requirements, cost targets, and program schedule goals.
Functions
- Take full technical responsibility for planning, organizing, and conducting technical projects within the design, fabrication, modification, and evaluation of electrical connectors and cable systems.
- Work closely with key customers and management to develop custom products and ensure products and services satisfy customer requirements.
- Translate customer and market requirements into product concepts by generating and illustrating ideas using brainstorm sessions, existing APH products, competition analysis, and patents in cooperation with multi-site teams.
- Ensure best product design for cost and manufacturing processes without affecting product functionality and performance, and confirm connectors chosen for a customer application meet all functional requirements.
- Conceive and plan projects involving the definition and selection of new concepts for connector, cable, and cable system design and development, including managing fabrication of components and prototype assembly.
- Create documents required to define and build products, including drawings, material specifications, bills of materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Work with cross-functional, multi-site teams to develop solutions meeting customer requirements, cost targets, and program schedule requirements, drawing on global engineering capabilities for collaborative interconnect product development.
- Provide product cost data and cost calculations on various product concepts to support Product Management and Manufacturing; provide technical support to Sales and marketing personnel, including training, presentations, and customer visits.
- Provide regular project status updates internally through project meetings, action trackers, management reviews, and email, and externally to customers through the same channels.
- Coordinate, analyze, and assess testing and qualifications to ensure product conformity with specifications; complete design verifications, including calculations, simulations, FEA, prototyping, and testing.
- Conduct competitive analysis with engineers and marketing to maximize competitiveness in cost, performance, and manufacturability; maintain and manage product engineering of new and existing components throughout the product lifecycle.
- Provide support to manufacturing facilities on cost reduction, quality, and customer issues, apply for patents when applicable, and stay current on technological developments in the connector and interconnection industries.
Experience & Qualifications
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
- 2 to 5 years of experience in product development/design.
- Experience in designing and developing high-speed connectors, cable assemblies, and cable assembly systems.
- Good communication, interpersonal, and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Ability to understand opposing viewpoints and negotiate and integrate different perspectives.
- Physical requirements include frequent use of hands, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, talking, hearing, and lifting to 20 pounds, with specific vision abilities including close, peripheral, and depth perception.
- Some travel is expected, approximately two to three weeks per quarter.
