Checker Job Description Template

1. About the Role

A Checker verifies that outgoing and incoming shipments match required counts before they move. Working within a distribution center or warehouse, the role sits between order fulfillment and final shipping, catching count discrepancies before they reach the customer, trigger costly claims, or delay a delivery route. Checkers reconcile load sheets against ERP or voice-picking records, and in food and beverage distribution centers, that verification must also satisfy HACCP and SQF audit standards, adding a compliance layer that goes well beyond simple counting or scanning. Accuracy here protects both product and people alike.

2. Position Summary

As the Checker, you verify load accuracy at every dispatch point, protecting the company from shipping errors, customer disputes, and regulatory compliance violations across incoming and outgoing freight. You work closely with warehouse supervisors, drivers, and inventory control staff to confirm counts before trucks leave, reporting any discrepancies within the same shift in which they occur.

3. Why Join Us

Career Impact: Mastering load verification and cycle-count accuracy opens paths toward forklift-certified and inventory-control positions in distribution operations.

Business Impact: Accurate counts at dispatch prevent shipment shortages that would otherwise reach customers and trigger claims or chargebacks.

Growth Opportunity: Consistent accuracy on load audits builds toward supervisory roles overseeing inventory control across an entire facility.

4. Key Responsibilities

  • Verify load counts against shipping documents and system records at check-in and check-out to catch discrepancies before dispatch.
  • Reconcile physical counts against inventory records to maintain accurate stock levels across the entire facility.

  • Report overages, shortages, and count discrepancies to supervisors within the same shift they are discovered.
  • Inspect incoming and outgoing shipments for damage, mislabeling, and packaging defects before they leave the loading dock.
  • Maintain daily checklists, load sheets, and inventory records to support ongoing audit and compliance reviews.
  • Coordinate with drivers and supervisors to confirm delivery readiness and resolve loading discrepancies quickly and accurately.
  • Support cycle counts and other inventory control procedures to keep warehouse stock records current and reliable.

5. Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent, or equivalent relevant work experience in a warehouse setting.
  • 1 or more years of experience in warehouse, inventory, or distribution center operations, including reconciliation duties.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.

  • Prior experience using computerized inventory or warehouse management systems to track, reconcile, and report stock movement.
  • Experience working within a regulated distribution environment, such as food, beverage, or pharmaceutical logistics operations.
  • Bilingual communication skills that support a diverse warehouse workforce and external driver base.

7. Success Metrics & Environment

  • Count accuracy rate, reflecting how few discrepancies occur between physical counts and system records.
  • Shipment error rate, measuring how often loaded orders match count and quality standards.
  • Mean time to resolve reported discrepancies, showing how quickly count issues are corrected.
  • Cycle count completion rate, reflecting consistency in supporting inventory control procedures.
  • On-time dock clearance rate, showing how efficiently inspected shipments move to dispatch.
  • Inventory shrinkage rate for checked product, reflecting how effectively count errors are caught before dispatch.

8. Compensation & Benefits (US Market Benchmark)

  • Base Salary Range: $32,000 to $42,000 per year, equivalent to roughly $15 to $20 per hour.
  • Bonus: Occasional attendance or productivity bonuses in some distribution centers, typically a few hundred dollars annually.
