Business Intelligence Architect Job Description Template
1. About the Role
A Business Intelligence Architect owns the semantic layer between raw enterprise data and the dashboards executives act on. Most BI teams run on dozens of ERP, CRM, and cloud data sources feeding a single warehouse; the Architect decides how those feeds are modeled, governed, and published so every downstream report tells the same story. That ownership spans dimensional data modeling, ETL governance, and the federated standards that keep self-service analytics from fragmenting into departmental silos.
2. Position Summary
As the Business Intelligence Architect, you translate enterprise data complexity into governed, scalable reporting solutions that power strategic decisions across business units. You operate within a data or analytics engineering team, defining the architectural standards that BI developers, data engineers, and business stakeholders rely on to deliver consistent, trustworthy insights.
3. Why Join Us
Career Impact: Owning the full BI architecture stack - from dimensional modeling to semantic-layer governance - builds the kind of cross-functional technical authority that advances careers from Architect to Principal or Head of Data.
Business Impact: The data models and ETL pipelines you architect determine whether business stakeholders can trust the KPI dashboards and OKR reports they use to allocate budget and headcount each quarter.
Growth Opportunity: Hands-on exposure to cloud-native data platforms and federated governance positions you to step into Data Platform Lead or Enterprise Data Architect roles as organizations expand their analytics programs.
4. Key Responsibilities
- Design and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models supporting enterprise data warehouse and data mart initiatives.
- Architect ETL pipelines and data integration processes that move, cleanse, and transform data from ERP, CRM, and disparate source systems into the reporting layer.
- Define and enforce BI architectural standards, governance policies, and best practices across development, testing, and production environments.
- Develop and publish dashboards, KPI scorecards, and self-service reporting solutions that translate complex data into actionable business insights.
- Lead requirements-gathering sessions with business and technical stakeholders to translate analytical needs into detailed BI solution specifications.
- Review and govern code, data models, and report objects contributed by BI developers to maintain quality, performance, and security compliance.
- Build and maintain architecture roadmaps covering a one-to-three-year horizon for data warehouse evolution and analytical platform capabilities.
- Partner with data engineers and database administrators to optimize query performance, data lineage, and metadata documentation across the BI ecosystem.
5. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
- 5 or more years of business intelligence architecture experience, with demonstrated ownership of enterprise data warehouse design and delivery.
- Proven competency in dimensional and relational data modeling, including star schema, snowflake, and Kimball or Inmon methodologies.
- Strong working knowledge of ETL design, development, and governance, including data lineage, transformation rules, and error handling.
- Demonstrated ability to write and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and views against large relational databases.
- Experience gathering and translating business requirements into BI solution specifications in cross-functional stakeholder environments.
- Ability to communicate architectural decisions, tradeoffs, and roadmaps to both technical teams and non-technical business audiences.
- Familiarity with data governance principles including metadata management, data quality frameworks, and access control standards.
6. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience implementing master data management programs or enterprise data governance structures with defined data ownership accountability.
- Proficiency with cloud data platform services covering data lake, data warehouse, and transformation orchestration capabilities.
- Exposure to advanced analytics methods including predictive modeling, machine learning pipelines, or IoT data integration within a BI architecture context.
- Relevant professional certification in a major BI platform or data architecture discipline.
7. Success Metrics & Environment
- Dashboard data freshness rate, measuring whether scheduled ETL loads meet agreed SLA windows.
- ETL pipeline error rate per release cycle, tracking how cleanly new data loads reach the reporting layer without failures.
- Report and model reuse ratio, reflecting how consistently published semantic objects are adopted rather than duplicated by downstream teams.
- Data governance coverage percentage, measuring the share of critical data assets with documented lineage, owners, and quality rules.
- Time from requirements sign-off to dashboard production deployment, tracking architectural delivery speed on new BI initiatives.
- Typical tools: Data modeling platforms (commonly erwin or dbt); BI visualization (commonly Power BI or Tableau); ETL and integration (commonly SSIS, Azure Data Factory, or ODI).
8. Compensation & Benefits (US Market Benchmark)
- Base Salary Range: $130,000 – $175,000 per year, depending on experience and location
- Bonus: Annual performance bonus, typically 8–15% of base salary
