BI Solution Architect Job Description Template

1. About the Role

A BI Solution Architect owns the data architecture decisions that determine whether an organization's reporting infrastructure stays reliable or becomes a bottleneck that costs analyst teams hours of rework per sprint. The role translates business requirements into data models, ETL pipelines, and visualization frameworks that serve Finance, Sales, and Operations stakeholders across cloud and on-premises environments. Most BI Architects in this space hold direct accountability for technology roadmaps that span multi-year platform modernization efforts. That combination of hands-on delivery authority and enterprise-wide planning scope sets this seat apart from adjacent analytical roles.

2. Position Summary

As the BI Solution Architect, you define the technical and functional architecture of enterprise data and analytics platforms, converting stakeholder reporting needs into scalable, governed solutions that support data-driven decisions across the organization. You operate within a cross-functional engineering team, partnering with product owners, delivery leads, and senior leadership to align the architecture roadmap with business direction.

3. Why Join Us

Career Impact: Owning an enterprise-wide BI roadmap builds a track record in dimensional modeling, cloud data warehouse governance, and Agile delivery that senior technical leadership roles in data engineering require.

Business Impact: When the architecture you design performs well, Finance and Sales teams get trustworthy, real-time reporting instead of reconciling conflicting figures from disconnected data sources.

Growth Opportunity: The breadth of this role, from proof-of-concept prototyping through production deployment and ongoing platform governance, accelerates movement into Director of Data Architecture or VP of Analytics positions.

4. Key Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain the enterprise BI architecture, including data models, ETL standards, and platform governance policies.
  • Lead solution architecture delivery on assigned programs, capturing scope, trade-offs, and rationale in clear architectural artifacts.
  • Partner with Finance, Sales, and Operations stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into technical data structures and visualization frameworks.
  • Own the technology roadmap for the BI and data warehouse environment, aligning platform priorities with multi-year business objectives.
  • Conduct design reviews of proposed and existing architectures to ensure production readiness, scalability, and standards compliance.
  • Drive adoption of best practices across delivery teams through internal guidelines, documentation, and hands-on technical advisory.
  • Evaluate and validate vendor solutions through proof-of-concept testing before integration into the production environment.
  • Mentor BI developers in data modeling, ETL design, and deployment standards to raise capability across the team.

5. Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5 or more years of BI solution architecture experience, with demonstrated ownership of enterprise data warehouse design and delivery.
  • Proficiency in dimensional and relational data modeling, including star schema, Data Vault, and columnar store design.
  • Experience designing and implementing cloud-based data warehouse environments and hybrid on-premises and cloud platforms.
  • Competency in ETL and data integration design, including transformation logic, pipeline orchestration, and data quality validation.
  • Strong ability to develop and communicate multi-year technical roadmaps to both engineering teams and non-technical senior stakeholders.
  • Experience implementing CI/CD practices, version control, and automated testing within BI and data platform delivery.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Agile and DevOps delivery methodologies applied to data and analytics programs.

6. Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading BI architecture in Finance, Accounting, or Sales domain environments where data governance and auditability are primary constraints.
  • Familiarity with cloud identity and access management frameworks, including role-based access control design for analytics platforms.
  • Exposure to unstructured data processing technologies and their integration patterns within governed enterprise data environments.
  • Prior experience in technology consulting or pre-sales architecture roles, with the ability to produce statements of work and solution proposals.

7. Success Metrics and Environment

  • Architecture artifacts delivered per program, measured against stakeholder sign-off rate and revision cycles.
  • Data model adoption rate, tracking the percentage of reporting built on governed, centrally maintained structures versus ad hoc queries.
  • Platform availability percentage for the production BI environment, reflecting infrastructure reliability under the architect's ownership.
  • Proof-of-concept completion time, measuring how quickly candidate solutions are evaluated and a recommendation is produced.
  • Roadmap milestone adherence rate, comparing planned versus actual delivery of platform modernization milestones across quarters.
  • Typical tools: BI and Visualization platforms (commonly Power BI or Tableau); cloud data warehouse platforms (commonly Snowflake or Redshift); ETL orchestration tools (commonly Azure Data Factory or SSIS).

8. Compensation and Benefits (US Market Benchmark)

  • Base Salary Range: $130,000 to $175,000 annually depending on experience and location.
  • Bonus: 10 to 15 percent annual performance bonus, common in enterprise technology environments.
  • Equity: RSUs or stock options offered at larger technology firms and publicly traded employers.
