Analytics Architect Job Description Template
1. About the Role
Turn the question "what does our data actually say?" into a decision. That is the everyday starting point for an Analytics Architect. This role owns the structural layer between raw enterprise data and the business intelligence that executives, product teams, and operations leaders act on - governing data warehouse design, target-state architecture, and analytics roadmaps that span cloud and on-premise environments. Getting it wrong means stakeholders draw conclusions from inconsistent models and misaligned data lineage. Getting it right means the organization's analytical investments compound over time.
2. Position Summary
As the Analytics Architect, you define and steward the data architecture strategy that transforms enterprise information assets into reliable, governed, and decision-ready intelligence for business and technology stakeholders. You will operate across data engineering, product, and executive functions, typically within a Commercial Digital Solutions or Enterprise Architecture team, partnering with BI Directors, Principal Architects, and cross-functional delivery leads to align architecture decisions with long-term organizational outcomes.
3. Why Join Us
Career Impact: Architects who own enterprise data warehouse strategy and cloud governance at this scope build a portfolio of decisions - target-state models, data lineage standards, proof-of-concept validations - that carries weight at the Director and VP level in subsequent roles.
Business Impact: The data models and governance standards produced in this role determine whether analytics investments yield consistent reporting or compounding technical debt across every business unit that depends on them.
Growth Opportunity: Sustained exposure to event-driven architecture, MDM, and cloud-native data platforms accelerates a path toward Principal Architect or Head of Data Architecture within three to five years.
4. Key Responsibilities
- Architect and implement enterprise data warehouse and data mart solutions that meet global business intelligence requirements.
- Define data architecture strategy and target-state roadmaps in alignment with BI Directors, Principal Architects, and business leadership.
- Direct ETL and BI developers on design standards, solution patterns, and implementation approaches across data pipeline work.
- Govern the data and information governance model across business units, including reference architecture, design patterns, and data lineage diagrams.
- Identify, prioritize, and execute data and analytics initiatives that align with enterprise strategy and measurable business outcomes.
- Review data quality metrics and translate identified issues into improvements to ingestion processes and data management practices.
- Mentor engineering and analytics teams by introducing architectural principles, synthesizing cross-functional technical concerns, and guiding implementation decisions.
- Develop proofs of concept to validate emerging technologies, architectural approaches, and cloud platform capabilities before full adoption.
5. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
- 7 or more years of data architecture or analytics engineering experience, with demonstrated ownership of enterprise-scale BI or data warehouse environments.
- Proven experience designing and implementing data governance frameworks, including data security, privacy, and residency policies.
- Strong command of data warehouse design principles, including dimensional modeling, data lineage, and change data capture techniques.
- Experience with cloud-native data architecture in hybrid and multi-cloud environments, including event-based and streaming data patterns.
- Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into technical architecture specifications and communicate decisions to executive-level stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of master data management, customer data platform concepts, and enterprise information architecture frameworks.
- Experience leading or directing cross-functional technical teams, including ETL developers, BI developers, and solution architects.
6. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with microservices and event-driven architecture patterns in data-forward enterprise environments.
- Familiarity with machine learning model integration within real-time decision engines or analytical pipelines.
- Exposure to SAP data structures, including BW or S/4HANA environments, in a multi-system enterprise landscape.
- Demonstrated experience with agile delivery methodologies applied to large-scale data platform programs.
7. Success Metrics and Environment
- Architecture compliance rate, measuring what percentage of delivered solutions conform to the approved target-state design.
- Data lineage coverage across governed domains, reflecting how completely data flows are documented and traceable.
- Proof-of-concept cycle time, measuring how quickly validated architectural decisions move from proposal to stakeholder sign-off.
- Data quality improvement rate, tracking reduction in ingestion errors following architecture-driven remediation.
- Stakeholder alignment score (NPS-equivalent), measuring how effectively architecture decisions are understood and adopted by product and engineering teams.
- Typical tools: cloud data warehouse platforms (commonly Azure Synapse or AWS Redshift); BI and visualization layers (commonly Power BI or Tableau); data pipeline orchestration (commonly Azure Data Factory or Apache Airflow).
8. Compensation and Benefits (US Market Benchmark)
- Base Salary Range: $140,000 to $185,000 annually, depending on seniority and location.
- Bonus: 10 to 20 percent annual performance-based bonus typical at this level.
- Equity: RSUs or stock options offered at many technology and enterprise software employers.
- Health Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage; employer contribution rates vary.
