ABAP Consultant Job Description Template

1. About the Role

Custom ABAP development is a precise craft. Translating a client's business process into working, maintainable SAP code, and defending that translation through technical reviews, integration testing, and post-go-live support takes more than programming ability. The SAP ABAP Consultant owns the technical delivery layer of client engagements, converting functional specifications into RICEFW objects and S/4HANA-compatible solutions within consulting project structures that often span multiple client organisations simultaneously. Sitting across onsite and offshore team models, the role reports to project or technical managers while acting as the primary technical contact for functional consultants and business SMEs on each engagement.

2. Position Summary

As the SAP ABAP Consultant, you translate client business requirements into technically sound SAP development artefacts,  from detailed programming designs through tested, documented code across RICEFW, enhancement frameworks, and integration objects. You operate within a consulting delivery model, reporting to a Project or Technical Manager, and collaborate daily with functional consultants, business SMEs, and onsite or offshore team members across concurrent client engagements.

3. Why Join Us

Career Impact: Delivering RICEFW objects and S/4HANA-compatible solutions across multiple client industries builds the cross-sector technical depth that makes senior SAP ABAP professionals consistently sought after in the consulting market.

Business Impact: When custom development stalls or breaks in production, client go-live timelines slip and project referenceability is lost. The SAP ABAP Consultant is the person who prevents that outcome and keeps delivery on track.

Growth Opportunity: Exposure to cloud migration projects, Agile sprint delivery, and emerging ABAP for HANA development positions consultants well for progression into SAP Technical Architect or Senior Consultant roles.

4. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop ABAP solutions spanning reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, forms and workflow objects to meet approved technical specifications.
  • Translate functional requirements into technical design documents and unit test scripts before development begins.
  • Review code produced by team members against SAP development guidelines and project quality standards.
  • Collaborate with functional consultants and business SMEs at each engagement stage to clarify requirements and validate solution fit.
  • Analyse and resolve production defects, performance issues and recurrent system errors, identifying root causes and documenting fixes.
  • Integrate third-party and cross-module components, coordinating with adjacent technical teams to manage system dependencies.
  • Maintain technical documentation, knowledge base entries and project artefacts to support handover and future maintenance.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, daily scrums and sprint demos, aligning development activity to sprint commitments.

5. Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5 or more years of SAP ABAP development experience, with demonstrated delivery of RICEFW objects in project environments.
  • Proficiency in translating business and functional requirements into technical specifications and programming designs.
  • Strong debugging and problem analysis skills, with the ability to resolve complex performance and logic issues independently.
  • Working knowledge of SAP module processes across at least two of SD, MM, FI, WM, or PM, sufficient to interpret functional designs.
  • Experience working within Agile or Scrum delivery frameworks, including sprint planning and iterative development cycles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, covering both technical documentation and client-facing interaction.

6. Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing in S/4HANA and ABAP for HANA environments, including CDS Views and OData services.
  • Familiarity with SAP Fiori and UI5 front-end development as a complement to core ABAP work.
  • Prior exposure to on/offshore team delivery models, including coordination across time zones and handover documentation practices.
  • Experience supporting pre-sales activities, including contributing to technical proposals or statements of work.

7. Success Metrics & Environment

  • RICEFW delivery rate per sprint, measuring how consistently development tasks are completed within committed sprint cycles.
  • Defect escape rate post-unit-test, tracking the proportion of issues caught before functional testing rather than after.
  • Code review pass rate on first submission, reflecting adherence to SAP ABAP development guidelines and project standards.
  • Mean time to resolution for production defects assigned to this consultant, measuring responsiveness to live-system issues.
  • Technical documentation completeness score per delivery milestone, assessed against project handover checklist criteria.
  • Typical tools: ABAP development environment (commonly SAP ABAP Workbench or SAP Business Application Studio); testing and ALM platforms (commonly SAP Solution Manager or equivalent)

8. Compensation & Benefits (US Market Benchmark)

  • Base Salary Range: $95,000 to $135,000 per year
  • Bonus: Performance-based annual bonus, typically 8 to 12 percent of base
  • Equity: Not typical at this level in consulting; project-based incentives may apply
  • Health Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage for employee and eligible dependents
  • PTO: 15 to 20 days annually, plus standard US federal holidays
  • Common Perks: Certification reimbursement for SAP credentials, remote or hybrid work options, structured onboarding for new engagement models

9. EEO & Legal
